Snackable Learning on interviews at Lemon: a look behind the scenes

At Lemon, your partner in business and software engineering, we think knowledge sharing is crucial. During the last Snackable Learning of the year, Stefan, our Digital Transformation Director, took the floor to share some insights on interview techniques. Find out why interviews are an essential part of our double diamond process and how they contribute to understanding our customers' needs.

The importance of interviews

Interviews are key to obtaining valuable information from stakeholders and end customers. In a company, we go through options with different stakeholders, while with end customers we dig into the reasons behind their choice of a particular product or service. More importantly, we discover their experiences at the time.

Tips for effective interviews

  • Experience varies: not everyone in a company has the same experience with customers. For some in management, it may have been years since they managed a customer project. Interviews help refresh these experiences and provide current insights.
  • Diversity in customers: when interviewing customers, avoid a focus on long-term customer relationships. This can create a distorted picture. Get a representative mix, including clients who have recently joined, to maintain a balanced perspective.
  • Representativeness is crucial: segmentation within the company is important, but it is also essential to represent different segments in appropriate proportions. Deviations are acceptable if there is specific interest in an underrepresented group.
  • Efficient planning: Hht selecting the right people and scheduling interviews takes the most time. Provide adequate breaks between interviews and limit the duration of each interview to one hour. Respect the time of everyone involved.
  • Use of silences: during the interview itself, the use of awkward silences is a powerful tool. Let the interviewer fill in the silence, and avoid over-directing the conversation.
  • Avoid yes/no questions: to gain deep insights, avoid yes/no questions. Use questions that begin with when, how long, how much, and introduce hypothetical scenarios to get people thinking.
